Community Conversations

Share your thoughts, quotes, associations, or anything the reading brings up for you.
Participate as much or as little as you like — this is a space to enjoy learning at your own rhythm.

A Space for Collective Learning

The Amalgama Book Club is more than reading — it’s a space for collective learning, where books spark reflection, conversation, and shared discovery.

This community is a quiet rebellion against the idea that no one reads anymore. By joining, you commit to taking a moment from your day to learn something meaningful, not only from the texts but also from one another.

Each month, through live sessions and our online discussion group, we connect literature, art, and life. It’s a place to broaden your perspective, deepen cultural understanding, and build a habit of intentional learning.

This month's reading

This month, we read two Cuban authors, including Alejo Carpentier, founder of lo real maravilloso, to explore Cuba’s literary context and its dialogue with Wifredo Lam and Latin American surrealism.

Alejo Carpentier: The Kingdom of this World

Based on real events in Haiti, this novel, seen through the eyes of a slave, follows a man who uses faith and magic to spark one of the strangest and most dramatic revolutions in history. Carpentier asks: Is American history a chronicle of lo real maravilloso?

Virgilio Piñera: Island

A poem by Virgilio Piñera in which a man becomes an island, a text that has become central to discussions of Cuban modern literature.

This month's reading

The Hearing Trumpet
Leonora Carrington

We follow 92-year-old Marian Leatherby as she enters a world of cosmic transformation and rebellious humour.

Homo Rodans
Remedios Varo
